Finding Avalon

A Canadian couple found their dream home on Turks and Caicos. Here Nijole Taylor  describes their experiences.

About sixteen years ago, we chartered a yacht to cruise bareback in the Virgin Islands. We were both completely awed by the Caribbean and knew that we would return many times. We also felt that when we found the “perfect” island we, would build a home.
We have vacationed in almost every island in the Caribbean and found each of them charming but not quite “the one”. We felt an immediate affinity with Providenciales, a “coming home” in a sense. On the second day of our stay, we knew we had found our ideal island.
Turks & Caicos
We liked the friendliness of the islanders, the gorgeous water and beaches and the fact that preserving the environment is taken very seriously. We also found the island to be far less commercialized than other more developed islands like Grand Cayman or Barbados. And certainly, political stability is very important.

The Buying process
We perused a real estate listings publication and were attracted by a certain style of architecture which eventually led us to Ron Shaw, a truly outstanding and extremely creative designer.
We chose Prestigious Properties and called their Agent Paul (Cheeze) Beresford. After our first meeting, in which we outlined our preferences, Paul was amazingly diligent in showing us only those properties which reflected our interest. He guided us through the buying process smoothly.
Presently, we are not in the position to spend extended periods of time at our   Providenciales home. It made sense to us to engage a property management company in order to have the villa occupied instead of standing empty for most of the year. We chose Island Villa Management and feel secure in the knowledge that our villa is always very well looked after by the excellent service the owners provide.
Avalon
The property is beach front with Turtle Cove Marina at the back.  The lot lends itself to 360 degree views. When we met with Ron Shaw, Bill and I expressed our desire to have a house that was truly Caribbean so that there was no barrier to the flow of indoors and outdoors. His design for the dinning room is truly stunning… we are surrounded by views on all sides. In fact, there isn’t any view of the villa that isn’t enticing.

Location
Our location gives us so much to do. As we’re situated on the beach, there is a marvellous snorkeling site literally a few steps away from the pool area. A short path leads to the beach and protected coral reef on Grace Bay. At the Turtle Cove Marina there are many first-rate restaurants within walking distance.
